Historic plates, , 120-130

I have regular tags on my '67 122 wagon,, but with all the modifications being done to the engine, passing emmissions might just be a pipe dream. A friend told me to get historic plates and that with those you don't need to get the car inspected at all. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there any limitations to using them? - like being restricted in the amount of miles one can drive?

thanks for the input
