Learned the hard way. When you take off the oil filler cap, put it upside down on the hole where the hood latch thingie goes in. Forgetting to put the cap back on will not hurt the engine, but it makes one helluva oily mess!

Oh, and do not overtighten the drain plug. Good idea to use a new crush washer.
