We have a '86 Volvo 740GLE wagon with approx 235K miles on it. Last week
it starting leaking auto trans fluid at an alarming rate...unfortunately,
this was the day before I had to make a business trip in it, and I had no
time to diagnose. It looked as if the fluid was leaking from the bell
housing, so I threw in a quart of "Trans-X" (trans stop leak), hoping to
get me through the trip. I did make it back, though I had to add about
4 quarts of fluid during the trip. Earlier this week, I was able to find
the problem - it was a cracked trans fluid to radiator line. I repaired
this and stopped the leakage, but this morning the trans stayed "stuck"
in first gear for over a mile until it began to reluctantly work correctly
again. I'm wondering if I toasted the trans (apparently a ZF-22 which is
somewhat fragile from what I've heard). If so, I've got to decide if I
should a)rebuild the existing trans ($$$), b)replace with a used AW70 (the
local Volvo shop has the parts for about $1200), c)replace the car with a
newer Volvo (if it's going to be too expensive to fix). Comments, please?
Thanks, Kevin
