Fixing windshield chips?

Maryland is picky about those. Four days before my temp tags were to run out, I tried to get a chip fixed at a glass shop, but the 1/8" star crack quadrupled in size under the suction cup. The 18 y.o. glass was "old and brittle", but I'm so happy with the new glass, so smooth, clear and absent that rattle trap hunk of metal trim, even though it remains the single most expensive item I've replaced. But, Haroon, you've seen my car and know the windshield is the better part of its value;-)
