John, I've fixed a few of these. It takes a lot of patience, but most of all, new belts.

The old belts lose their sticktuity and fail to drive the head swapping cams through the cycle. I've avoided getting spoiled by a modern sound system for a long time now. Belts can be had for pennies at Studio Sound Electronics.
