ROugh running 140-160 1969

My 1969 142 runs great in the morning when its cool or for the first half hoour I am driving but after that it starts to "miss". Today there was a lot of traffic and my normal 30 minute drive took 1 hour. It was running pretty rough. On hills or in the low end of the gear, it would stutter pretty bad. At stop lights it would idle, but sounded as if was going to die every now and then. I stopped at the store and left it running for fear of not getting it started again. My passenger maintained idle if need be. When I came out to leave, I couldn't step on the gas. The slightest pressure would make it hessitate. I eventually killed it and was not able to get it started. After checking under the hood, I noticed that the clear plastic fuel filter was pretty dry. After sitting for 5 minutes, it once again had fuel but still would not start.
I sort of think that the weather has something to do with it because on sunny days, it seems to run like this. All winter it seemed to run fine but I do remember near the end of last summer I had some of the same problems.
I verified it has spark and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the igniton. Fuel pump? Any ideas?
