Bad Synthetics and oil changes

Here's a question that may be kind of dumb, but here it goes - I have used Mobil 1 syn since I bought my '88 745t, but always change the filter everytime I change the oil. Question: How do you change only the filter without making a total mess or is the oil almost all in the pan so you only lose what is in the filter itself. Thanks.
