Torque Converter 700 1988

I have a 740 B230F AW71, in the manual it mentions something about a torque converter! Does that mean that the revs should drop right down when in 4th gear and at a certain speed???? Coz that isn't actually happening at the moment if u know what I mean.

60kmh - approx 1800rpm
80kmh - approx 2500rpm

In my friends Mazda 323 it acts like there is a 5th gear!!! Should it be like that on the brick?
