On my 1991 240 the check engine light came on. Upon reading the fault code, it signaled a defective air mass meter. I reset the computer (disconnected the negative battery cable for 30 seconds) cranked the engine and it ran like crap.
After about 10 minutes the light came on again and the car ran much better.
The computer has a built in fault mode that allows the engine to run with a defective air meter (albeit not perfectly). I drove this car for about 3 years before I finally ran across a good used meter at a good price. After installation I once again reset the computer and the car has run good since.
I bought this car with 20000 miles and this week it will turn over to 200000.
Great engineering on a great car.
I'm a 35 year volvo owner and do it yourselfer.
