Best bang for your buck:
Where the pipe goes over the axle, cut it before the rear muffler and route it straight out the same (passenger) side. Most muffler shops will do this, and it's not too expensive. A lot less back-pressure and more 'growl'. From here, you can go to a performance muffler easily. Consider the Volvo F.I. header for your street car - you would only lose about 4-5 HP to a 4-branch, and that's mostly at 5,000+ RPMs. Should be able to pick one up for about a $100 LESS than a store-bought header!
