Quick Question 700

OK i was checking my spark plugs the other day and i noticed after busting my knuckels that there are 4 little metal pieces that hang off the edge right above where the spark plug wires connect to the plugs. Does everyone have these? If so what purpose do they surve besides makeing almost imposible to change your plugs wtih out drawing blood?
