Sure sounds like a crumbling wiring harness. As you shift among gears, the engine tends to tilt slightly (torque reaction) and bare wires somewhere are intermittently touching.

I bought a perfect used harness for my '86 240 from a respected eBay seller for about $90. Someday I'll install it -- in the meantime, the "liquid tape" continues to keep all those harness wires insulated.
