The car is an 82 DL w/ 130k. I've never had a problem with the battery light until I changed the alternator mount bushings. The alternator WAS very mis-aligned due to the worn bushings. I also replaced the alt. belts when I changed the bushings. After changing the belts and bushings, we took a 250 mile trip, about half way through the journey, the batt warning light came on very faint, it would turn on and off regardless of engine speed, load, or electrical items turned on in the car. (I'm not 100% sure if the belts were properly tensioned for this trip) After the trip, I tightend the belts and the light still came on, always faintly though. just for kicks I pulled the alternator and had it cleaned and the regulator/brush pack replaced. Again, the light came on today after 20 min on the highway. The light was even on while at idle, the light is always very faint.
I have double checked the belts and they seem to be in spec, 1/4" deflection @ 50 lb.... approx. The pulleys on the alternator and WP seem very shiny, the belts appear to have a little glazing, but still seem to be in good shape, (they only have 500 miles on them), dont know the history of the battery, it is original from when I purchased the car. The car always starts easily even in 0° weather.
Is it possible that the belts are trashed after 250 mi without proper tension??
Is the super-shiny alternator pulley a concern?
Can a weak battery cause this light to come on?
Looking for suggestions.
Thanks a bunch !!
Matt
