Gear Shift Release button on 1993 960 Auto

I recently purchased a 1993 960. The release button on the gear shift is loose and sometimes gets out of position to the point that the lever will not move out of park. I don't see how to remove the gear shift knob to repair/replace the button. Can anyone help.
