fuel problem 120-130 1966

My son has been able to smell gas when his'64 122 is running. Gas has leaked from his float chanbers, but he installed a adjustable pressure regulator in the fuel line and reduced pressure to 1 psi as recommended. The leak stopped and the smell did, as well. On the freeway, it felt as is his car wasn't getting enough gas, so he increased pressure a bit (by 1/2 or 1 psi). The car runs well, but the gas smell is back and he can't find the source of the probable leak. Anybody with some insight?
