All the Volvo engine designations have a one letter or another after the number. The "230" engine is either a B230F or a B230FT ("T" for turbo) in the US.
Often people refer to the engine as the "230" to differentiate it from the B21F/FT or B23F/FT or B234 engines where differences might exist across engine families but where differences do not exist within the 230 family. Water pump, for example.
In the US, all 230 engines are B230F or B230FT. The first year for the 230 was '85. Before that it was the B23F (also a 2.3 liter engine), and before that the B21F/FT (2.1 liter, both NA and turbo). One or two early years of the 740 had a turbo version of the B23 engine, now highly desirable by some.
