Re: Help! My mechanic is stumped. 700 1991

-----Original Message-----

The blower motor was producing too much resistance and burning out the ground. The mechanic says $250 for a new one installed.

I'm thinking of doing it myself. How hard is this job and what's it take?

The removal of the blower motor once you've removed the glove box is a matter of removing 5 or 6 screws (small nut driver required)from the perimeter of the blower.

If you replace the unit with one from Volvo, it will come with the proper

cage (fan) and then it's a simple matter of replacement.

To save a few bucks, I took my blower motor to an automotive supplier and

since the original is an AC Delco (General Motors), they were able to cross

reference it to an early 90's or late 80's Cadillac Fleetwood. I can't remember the exact model year but their part number is 15-8544 ($90US and

guaranteed for life). It is the very same motor down to the wiring harness

however the cage will look identical but it is in fact reverse. You'll have to swap the cages.

1. Remove the Volvo cage from the blown motor by holding on to all sides of the cage with two hands and having a second person gently tap out the shaft from the end using a small punch and hammer. BEFORE however, measure the spacing between the motor body and the cage.

2. Install the Volvo cage on the new motor by gently tapping it in place

until you're down to the measured spacing from item 1. Be careful to rest

the other end of the motor shaft against a solid object. Do not use the

motor body for support as you'll run the risk of moving the shaft on its

bushings.

3. Using a 12V source, note the rotation direction of the 2 motors. Match

the rotation of the replacement motor to that of the Volvo by simply

swapping the 2 wires at the plug. It's a bit tricky getting the wires out of the plug end but usually prodding with a small screwdriver will release the wire connector from within the plug.

4. Reinstall but before replacing the glove box perform the following test

to ensure good clearance between the end of the cage and the fan housing.

With the fan running, push slightly against the motor. If it doesn't rub

against the housing, you're golden. Otherwise, go back to step 2 and tap the cage down another 1/16".
