I had an '84 245 Turbo Wagon (Intercooled). I had gone
to train my dog down in Rhode Island and many of the gas
stations were closed and I was near the RED ZONE (for
loading and unloading only...). I've been here before,
so I just went another 15 miles or so to the field, spent
the day training and then went to leave.
Car starts fine, as usual - in fact, I had this baby tuned
to start on the first little blip of the ignition key (very
proud of that mind you).
Go about 1/4 mile and suddenly I'm riding Silver - yee haw,
it's bucking and bouncing and absolutely a gutless wonder
when it smoothed out. Pulled over, shut it off. Opened
the hood to check the engine. Yeap, engine was still there.
Closed the hood and went on my way... ran absolutely perfectly
until I went to accelerate onto the highway to go to the
next gas station (who knows, maybe my gauge was faulty and
I was lower than I thought). Anytime I leaned into the
throttle (getting the boost into the yellow zone) the car
would not accelerate any faster no matter how hard I had
my foot down.
Finally got to the gas station and figured I'd be all set
now - fill up, get home, and order a new fuel filter (it
was due for one, but I replace them every 10k whether it
needs it or not).
Wrongo - full tank of gas and the same symptom. Got it to
a mechanic (dealer, but there's one guy there that' top notch)
figuring it was going to be a fuel pump problem and I don't
like messing with tanks at my house.
Took him 7 hours to figure it out. Drove him crazy.
Again, one of those things you just don't think to check
since it's so basic.
Information (relevent or not):
It's an automatic.
At the time, it had 158k miles.
Original turbo.
Original oil (kidding).
Very recent tune-up (plugs, cap, rotor, etc.) which included
installing new injectors and fuel filter.
Have fun!
