fuel problems 700 1988

My sixteen year-old son was driving and noticed by the time he got to his destination (fifteen minutes away) the engine was sputtering (rapidly accelerating and de-accelerating). He didn't do or say anything about it and on the way home the condition replicated itself after about ten minutes, it took him some time to get through an intersection by lunging his way through it (the car then stalled). He then called me to inform that there was "something wrong with the car". By the time I got there (five minutes) I was able to start and move the car to a safe location about thirty feet away and car stalled out after it sputtered for about 10 seconds. During the sputtering the tach showed the RPM's racing up then down. About an hour later, I was able to start the car and drive it home (aproximately 2 miles) as I was pulling into driveway, it began lunging again. Am I correct in thinking this is some type of problem with fuel system? If so, can anyone isolate where the problem lies. If not a fuel problem, where should I look? Thanks, Andy
