I had a similar problem with my 93 945t. Thanks to the great input from the others who use this site, it was correctly diagnosed as the exhaust cover gasket. I couldn't hear the ticking when revving in neutral, but as soon as I shifted into a gear it began. It was very apparent at kickdown / when under load.

I also detected a faint exhaust smell under the hood due to the leak.
