Intermittent alternator charging problem 900 1993

Hi, I have a 1993 940 Wagon. I have been having a strange problem for the last year. At first it only happened every month or so, now it is a daily occurence. All of the electrical functions of the car start shutting down - usually the cruise first, then the gas guage, speedo, temp, radio, etc. I discovered that all I had to do was slap the top of the dash and bam, everything came back. When it starting happening on a daily occurance I was able to do some troubleshooting. I figured out that the alternator would stop charging the battery, that is why I started losing functions one by one. I could actually see the voltage dropping at the battery, then I would slap the dash and I would have normal charging voltage at the battery. Now it is getting to the point that slapping the dash isn't doing the trick (and I really don't like beating on my car). I am wondering if there is a loose connection or a relay under the dash that is faulty. Then I keep wondering what under the dash could have anything to do with the charging circuit. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I don't want to start dismantling my dashboard without some kind of idea what I am looking for. Thanks in advance, David.
