TDC - firing stroke 200 83

Hi,

I have what I hope is a simple question. My '83 Turbo's timing belt slipped and I am replacing it. The book refers to TDC on the firing stroke. I have the piston at TDC, but I thought that when it was in this position, it was on the firing stroke. If this is not so, how can I tell when it is on the firing stroke?
