The gauges may be related to having a defective voltage regulator for

the dash gauges. There is a ten volt regulator that is on the back of the

speedo in the cluster. For the speedo there may be a break that is intermittent on the wire from the sensor or the sensor in the rear axle may be bad.

For the trans I would check the shiftdown cable. This was bad on my

sisters wagon.

A good idea is to clean the fuse box contacts and replace the fuses if

they are old.
