Have an 89-740 Turbo Wagon with 199K (owned for 2 months). Has been running pretty well so far except for a poor idle problem on cold start. Once engine temp is up, even between stops, idles just fine and smooth. Read FAQ many times and looks like throttle body crud or something like that. Just read a post about brake booster problems on a 240, could this be the problem? Sometimes she dies after some "hunting" before engaging gear. I've been lightly touching the gas to keep her running (trying to be mindful of not racing the engine before warmup). At times the car stalls before I can engage from park. So far, starts right up and goes after that. Once in gear, RPM jumps up and settles out. There are days when the idle seems ok on cold start (not often but sometimes). The hunting part makes me think it's the throttle body gizmo as the RPM's will jump and then drop to zero while in park. Being a "newbie" & not DIY at this time, I am hesitant to start pulling engine related parts out for cleaning. I also assume that the "ace" non-volvo mechanic that sold me the car may have fudged the idle adjustment without cleaning etc (someone called this the "lazy" mechanic's method)and once cleaned, may rev to high.
I am not ready yet for making engine adjustments etc..Any advice would be appreciated, even if you tell me to read the FAQ again!! Going in for an oil change soon and want to have some frame of an idea what the problem is so I don't get soaked to bad.
Thanks guys, for any direction.
Mike
