used compressor 700 1985

Have been pricing new and rebuilt compressors; also I can get one at the local bone yard for $20. They told me that from 1985 to 1992 is pretty much the same.Is there anyway to tell if it's good, besides actually installing it? Am I wasting my time going with a used one??????????
