I tried it several times and noticed if I did it quickly and got fewer correct answers I got better scores than if I did it a LITTLE slower and got more correct ones. I just banged in the answers and only got 17 right and got 680 points and (currently) #4 position. Slower, more thoughtful (but not that much slower) with 20 right only bagged 495 points. So your random number scheme did well because you just plugged the answers in quickly, I suppose. I think the time portion of the score should be a little less emphasized. I guess they don't want to give people the time to look up the answers.
