How do I remove a stud? 200 1984

I have a stud tightened in place. How do I get it out? If I grab it with something (like vice grips) and turn in, I ruin the threads. Should I put a nut on it and then crush the nut and try to turn it, or will that ruin the threads too? Any hints...
