Speedometer 700 1991

The speedoometer quit working about a week ago. It started working again the next day. It has gotten to where it only works for about 2 minutes when the car is cold or has been parked for about 15-20 minutes and then only for a mile or less. I ckeked tahe connection at the sending unit on the rear axle. What's going on??
