tranny fluid

I brought my 1990 volvo in to have the transmission fluid changed. I was told it would take an hour to replace the fluid and pan gasket (I was on my lunch break). After an hour and a half I was told that they don't recomend new fluid because the fluid was burnt and will make the tranny inoperable if they replace the fluid. They then said it would cost 275 to take the tranny off just to see what ever might be the problem. Is this true is there a point were it is detremental to replace the fluid??? Am I being taken for a ride? I have the AW71 tranny which is supposed to be pretty good.
