Re: cleaning power seat switches? 700 87

I've heard of people cleaning the switches but it seems to be on an annual basis...that's ok for an old car with parts you can't get or window switches that are relatively easy to pop out, but I didn't want to keep doing that on our 87 760T.

I would recommend you just get the new power seat switch assembly and replace the one in the car. The switches are snapped into the assembly but were soldered connections on my car...to clean them you'd have to desolder the switches, remove and clean and replace and resolder, with no assurance of the job holding.

A new switch assembly cost $200 about 4 years ago, Gosh only knows what it costs today, so look around.

By the way, IMHO the fumes from cigarettes and cigars do a lot to corrode the switchgear on these cars (also my used Saab 900T...I seemed to have fewer switch problems on the new 84 when I was the only one who drove it smokeless.) judging from the slimy brown deposits on the switches when I disassemble them....one of the reasons I now look for evidence of smoking in the car when I buy a new car...I won't buy a smoker's car at ANY price because I'm convinced I'll be doing too much electrical work on the car in the future. If you don't believe this, try disassembling a switch from a smoker's car (you won't have to wait long, they'll jump out at you!)!
