Very likely the plastic sheathing around the cable has cracked, and moisture has slowly seeped into the cable. Over time this will rust the cable, and in cold weather the moisture will freeze causing just what you described.

My '86 245 needed a replacement for just this reason.

It was a 2-3 hour job, and drip-drip-drip into the hair. If you tackle the job yourself, drain the tranny and let it drip for a day or two before dropping the pan.
