ATF is generic for automatic transmission fluids. However, different manufacturers want different properties in their ATF.
Generous Motors and a number of others specify Dexron (now up to Dexron III).
Chrylers (and Mitsubishi) specify ATF Plus (now up to Plus 4).
Ford used to use Type F, then went to Mercon (very similar to the early Dexron blends). Now, for their newer cars, they specify Mercon V (which is, I believe) a partial synthetic.
Several other manufacturers now specify their own "special blend" ATF. Since they don't release specifics, it is impossible to know if any of the existing common blends will do the job.
AMSOIL synthetic ATF meets/exceeds the specs for Dexron II, Dexron III; Mercon, Mercon V; ATF+ through ATF+4; Allison C-3,C-4; Caterpillar TO-2, TO-3; Voith Commercial, Opel and GM Strasbourg. Service life is up to three times longer than non-synthetic ATF
