1987 was the last year that had the wiring harness problem, AFAIK (I have an '87 that had the wiring harness replaced), so I don't think you should have the problem with a low mileage '89 240. I don't know how to fix your brake light problem, but somewhere along the line there's probably a wire that isn't connected correctly or completely.
