Check engine light 700 1990

Recently our 740 turbo's chek engine light has come on steady. I have looked for possible causes in my maintenance manual but it does not address this light being illuminated. It is a California car and has only 89,000 original miles. Is there a code I can look for on the diagnostic computer or is this something caused by a O2 sensor? Any help would be appreciated.
