Is this a new symptom or has it been there all along. Is the "flat spot" at full or partial throttle? Is it related to engine speed or is the transmission also involved.

Easy things first would be to make sure the fuel system is "clean" by giving it a treatment of Chevron Techron. Then if you think the transmission is involved, a filter change followed by a full flush with synthetic ATF would be in order.

My manuals are for the '96, which has an all new computer system so I can't add much more.
