engine diagnostic question 900 1991

Hi,

I noticed that in the upper right side of the engine compartment near the master cylinder there is a small plastic box with several holes, a plug and an LED. I was told that this is used for diagnosing engine problems. Can anyone tell me if this is true and if so where I can find the specifics on how it works?
