Don't know the details of the wiring but:
The heated seats don't work when the contact is off. They must draw some power and a relay will prevent damage to your ignition switch. I also get the impression they have a thermostat somewhere. The are really nice and hot in the beginning but when your ass is comfy the seat seem to switch to a more relaxed mode, leaving you with a normal seat feeling (rather than something sweaty). I image the thermo must be in the seat somewhere, mabye the relay does the power switching, based on a temp sensor in the seat?
My heated seats have the switches at the hand brake column (M47 trans) and are powered by 4 wires (would make sense with 2x power, 2x temp sensor signal. If you really need to know I can hook up an amp meter and tell you what the amps are and if there is a switching pattern (thermostat).
Let me know how you are getting on.
