I think the time limit is set assuming normal usage, possibly in a city situation where mileage may be short but idle times are long.

Used oil, sitting in the crankcase can be somewhat acidic, and is better changed out.

But if you're running on low compression and no floors in a beater, you can probably just add oil as its burned and not worry about anything until it dies.
