That is interesting about having lots of shims on hand.
I have never thought about how the valves stem length should even change between its stem tip and the tulips seating area or angle. Sealed either way … has to happen.
In my mind or what’s left of it😊, a valve closed should be setup on the lowest point of push of the cams circular range.
I don’t see much reason for a bunch of shim shifting but I’m a person that has never dealt with doing mods.

Maybe that’s why they call it a VX CAM?
I don’t know what “X” can mean in this case.
It’s an unknown value in many thought patterns.
The “V” I suppose represents the up and down movement of the valve?

I understand the purpose of moving the duration of open to close and the point of which it happens is the major purpose.
Variable valve timing “on the fly” is the newest craze on car engines.
Despite it having complexity, that can be costly to all consumers down the lines of ownerships.
This doesn’t help resale value but those that can afford the risk don’t have a clue or care less.

Doing modifications changes the stack of “would be buyers” too.
It’s bad enough buying used anything nowadays. IMHO

There’s a fixed amount of the pistol’s total air volumes, so it going to create an enhancement on either of the intake side or the exhaust side.
Variants for a Better intake filling in the same duration of time, using a limited physical space is borrowing a value of allowed time to clear a cylinder of exhaust.
This why the torque band moves even though the engine is a fixed air volume compressor. Bottom line.
There has to be a trade off somewhere, in performance and not necessarily in a good way for mileage if your foot is wanting to feel some different.
The makers of engines build to satisfy the greatest of customers that can be a broad spectrum and compromises have to be assimilated into the design for the bean counters for funding.

IPD and other many other marketers are selling snake oil for those looking for what ever?
A valve cam change out is just reshaping what you have into some more or less functional in ways while appearing more useful in satisfying a niche to pinch an inch or a dollar more entertainment value.

Putting in a cam is a “playing around kind of thing” to do for us mechanical types!
Entertainment is where you find it and whatever it’s worth to you.

I guess you can say I don’t drink much TEA. 🤔. Time on my hands, yep …. but they stay cleaner!😊
