wiper cable 900 1993

1993 940 2.0 turbo RHD Manual UK.

Noticed that the left hand wiper was playing up and had a mind of its own with the MOT booked in for Monday! Typical. Took the wiper assembly out yesterday and fixed it. The left hand wiper is worked by an oval cam with a cable operating it by looping round it, retained at one end by a slot in the operating arm and looping round to an adjuster at the other end. Traction takes place by means of a nipple, clamped by a screw at the top of the oval cam at roughly the midpoint of the cable. Anyway, a couple of strands had broken and the clamp pressure disappeared allowing the cable to slip through one way then the other. I had fixed it before by cutting up a bicycle gear cable (which is slightly thinner than the brake cables) but can see after about 4 years the cable squashes down, so this time Ive used the brake cable and it works fine. The nipple end i've put through the armature, and to make sure it engages in the slot i've trimmed the plastic off a small choc block electrical connector (no screws) and slid it over the cable. The other end Ive used a standard bicycle nipple holder which sits in the cable adjuster and for belt and braces used another choc block connector to make the cable super secure. Finish off the cable end with one of those little aluminium cable ends (usually come with the cable) and squash it on with some pliers as it will scrape backwards and forwards as the mechanism moves if you've left a couple of spare inches of cable there. It all worked fine on my 50mile trip in the rain today. The scuttle plate is a pig to get back in and since it was tipping down with rain when I was doing it I didn't get it in the middle clip so its a bit proud of the windscreen. I'll redo that when the sun shines and its above 10 deg C.
