I have a 960 w/ 196k and getting ready to do the PCV system. I saw how difficult is to remove the starter on this car and started thinking about just replacing it while I do the PCV. It easily accessible when the intake is out.

The starter and alternator still the original parts but the alternator can easily be swap at a parking lot with right tools.

I am also doing the timing later on and will probably take the car on a nice long trip from the mid west down to New Mexico and up to San Francisco.
