To the best of my knowledge, the "performance" of the B230f did vary much at all during its entire production run. Changes in the rods/crank/oil squirters and fuel injection/ignition...yes. Compression ratio, cam profile, etc...I think they stayed substantially the same. I have no documentation in front of me proving this but I am about 85% confident.
You either had a significant issue with the 1987 or an oddball rear ratio. The cruising RPM: the M46 has a 0.79 OD gear and the AW70 a 0.69 so even with the (stock) rear ends of 3.31 and 3.73 respectively would have very similar "top" gearing.
