Hi, I'm a Corvair guy who just bought a 1966 122s and I'm trying to figure some stuff out. The car I bought had no key so the guy (i bought it from) put in a pushbutton switch for the starter and another one to turn the car "on"...he also put in a blue Bosch coil so the car can run and drive and an electric fuel pump...all this is good but it was mainly done to get the car sell-able, he did it rather sloppily.
I was tuning the carbs and the car stopped running, for some reason the car was "off" even though the switch was "on" so the electric fuel pump wouldn't do it's thing...I messed around with the switch and it started to smoke...I removed that rinky-dink switch's wires from the stock volvo ignition switch and tossed it and decided i might as well have a key made. Had the key made and was able to get blinkers and wipers working by turning the key to "on" -Yay! decided to have another one cut on the spot but that one wouldn't work (?) -then the original key made wouldn't turn to the "on" position either...then the ignition switch started to smoke!
I managed to get the key to the on position (battery cable disconnected) after much effort and removed the lock cylinder by pressing the lil button behind and removed the entire switch/coil assembly...this car came with an extra switch/coil assembly which I put in loosely just to see if it works...it turns the electrical on and I want to see if I can get it to work off the coil on that assembly....My Question is
There is a green wire not connected to anything that looks like it goes on the solenoid but according to wiring diagram it goes to starter relay -is the relay the solenoid? What other wiring do i need to connect to test this unit? and
Is this a waste of time?...maybe I should just set everything up to work on the Blue Bosch coil and a switch I can buy new at my FLAPS and forget about the extra coil/switch assembly
Should I plunk down $175 on an original switch/coil that is for sale on e-bay?
After spending $160 on the new key made it would be nice to use the stock system...any help would be great - Thanks!
