Transmission Problem Solved S90-V90 1998

As hf63 says, you definitely should flush the transmission. The procedure is quite simple and is outlined in detail in the 700/900FAQs. Search in the drop down box "more" at the top of this page.

The instructions refer to flushing the 700/900 AW7x transmissions, but the procedure is identical for the AW30/40 in your (and my) S/V90, with a couple of minor differences:

-the fitting on the rad cooler is much larger than the 700/900 cars and needs a clear vinyl hose of 25mm (1-inch) diameter to fit over it. Helps if you heat the hose end with a hair dryer or similar to make it easy to go over the big hex nut.

-the AW30/40 pumps out fluid from the rad cooler fitting at a much faster rate than the AW7x units. Be ready to jump to the ignition key and switch off every time bubbles appear in the clear hose. (You do the flush in stages).

I used Dexron VI fluid (Valvoline MaxLife) in my S90 which is the latest Dexron spec. and meets all specs for the Dex III recommended 20 years ago for our transmissions, but has better capabilities in terms of anti-foaming, durability, temperature stability, etc.
