Hi Bork,
Find out the problem before you start ordering the parts. My main pump made that loud noise but it turned out that the 2" fuel hose had developed a small crack. I couldn't see it until I took them apart. Don't do what I did. You may just need to reattach the wiring.
I bought the IPD intank fuel pump motor. I don't see any gain in performance and it's much loud than the original pump. It's running well so far. I don't like the paper thin sock that came with the kit. If you decide to upgrade the motor, I recommend you to go back within few month and clean the sock again. I guess the motor is powerful that it picked up all kinds of dirt. The sock appeared to be OK by the second time I checked.
You may want to get this tool. It will make your job easier, save your energy and let you focus on other tasks. It's on sale now for $21.60. Or you can follow the Art's method.

I had to open up the tank few times. Every time, I felt it was much easier to remove the fuel sending unit than putting it back. Try to video tape the removing process unless you have really good memory. It will help you how to put it back. You can squeeze the floating ball against the metal pick up tube so that it will clear the opening. You can also grab it as you pull it through. No pun intended.
You got a wagon. Correct? Place a long wood plank in the cargo area so that you can lay down comfortably while you work. Support it with a chair if it gets too long. Get a towel so that you can wipe your tears and sweats away from the opening.
Good luck.
