Hey OldDuke,
I have a '95 850 wagon w/186K and an '85 244 w/247K and love them both. I must admit that the 850 at its mileage is in better shape and has held up better than the 244 when it was at the same mileage. The 850 rides better, the seats are very comfortable, has no rust and the original muffler parts. I've replace the radiator, 1 caliper, top engine mount, heater core, driver's seat back motor cable, front struts, and just a few other minor things. My 850's AC has to be recharged every year though. The engine compartment is a bit tight but the aux and timing belts are no great challenge. A plus for the '95 850 is that you have a black box in the engine compartment enabling you to read the engine codes yourself. The auto trans are pretty robust if you change the fluid every 30K or so and be sure to come to a complete stop when going between D and R.
Can't help you with the non=working speedo...sorry.
