...how smooth is the action of the damper? This has nothing to do with the thermostast installation but rather it's operation after you install it.
I ask because I have a couple of spare air boxes in which the dampers are both stiff and would not function properly in actual service unless lubed or otherwise made to reliably open and shut. Not being a proponent of the damper thermostat I always remove the damper so it's action has never been an issue for me.
If you are determined to use the thermostat, check on this. The thermostat won't do much good if the damper is reluctant to move. And on an '85, which from your description sounds a bit neglected, I'd bet it is.
