I should have seen your post before. It has come up several times in the 14 years I've been haunting this list.
When you swap the dash, you don't disconnect the battery (or remove fuse 8) so the clock remains powered. Just one slip and a tiny spark later, a trace opens up on the cluster board. Here's a place it happened on someone's cluster many years ago.
For that reason, I include the battery step in my dash removal pict.
