Best way to clean an engine?

I just cleaned oodles of old oil and clutch disc material off of my friend's engine and transmission, and I highly recommend Simple Green.

I also got my engine steam cleaned years ago and it had no new problems when it came back. I'd love to get it steam cleaned again.
