Well, maybe not the most economical or even successful approach, but my shop replaced the main pump, relay, and filter. Their theory, which sounded good, was that I had received my money's-worth from the original fuel pump (320K miles), and it was better than spending shop time on diagnosis.

Still, it could be a spark issue.

Thanks to all, and I'll update the thread if it happens again.
